Intensive courses will be recommended by testers at the time of assessment or reassessment, or by SLD teachers if they think they would be of benefit to a student. Preference will be given to students who do not have access to a trained SLD teacher or who do not make progress with weekly sessions. Sometimes, if a student is very far behind age level and has lost confidence, the intensive course may be recommended to help them regain confidence. Courses are on a one to one basis and are held in the mornings from 9am to 12 noon or afternoons from 1pm to 4pm Monday to Friday, for a period of three weeks during term time, totaling 45 hours tuition.
The Intensive course is not a school programme. It is a specifically designed individual programme to strengthen the underpinning weaknesses which are preventing the student from reaching his learning potential. The course is, as the name implies, a period of intensive 1:1 teaching. The teacher may request some assistance from the parents in the afternoon/evening by giving homework activities to consolidate the learning introduced in the course. Ideally it will be followed by ongoing SLD remediation, either with a teacher or a home programme.
