Seabrook McKenzie Teaching Certificate in Specific Learning Disabilities
This course is to provide registered teachers and professionals working in related fields of health and education with a framework to understand and provide support for neurodiverse learners with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs), including dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and more. You will be given the training you need to support planning interventions and/or an adapted curriculum for SLD students, whether in a one-on-one, small group, or inclusive classroom setting.

Our course is custom designed and led by a team of experienced instructors, practitioners and experts in the field of SLDs. It is founded on the science of learning but focused on practical techniques to work with students. Major topics will include:
-
Understanding how SLDs affect learning and wellbeing.
-
How teaching can be best adapted for students with SLDs.
-
Effective intervention methods, and how to plan, implement, and monitor evidence-based interventions.
-
How to consider other types of neurodiversity that often co-occur with SLDs (e.g. ADHD, autism, anxiety).

This course will appeal to registered teachers who are wanting to become SLD teacher-tutors, as well as to SENCOs, LSCs, teacher aides, and other professionals working to support SLD individuals.

The course will be face-to-face in Christchurch, with a blended option for distance students. It will run from 13th April to 8th October 2026, and consist of three block courses (four days in the second week of each school holiday), as well as one-day seminars on roughly every second Saturday of Terms 2 and 3 (four Saturdays each term).

After finishing the course, if you wish to become a registered teacher-tutor through the Seabrook McKenzie Centre, we offer a mentored provisional registration period for one year. Working as an SLD teacher-tutor is a rewarding and flexible job, which can provide you with an extra income source, whilst still staying connected to a community of practice through our Centre.

Our Centre offers a number of benefits for registered teacher-tutors including client referrals from the Centre, financial support for some of your students, access to the Centre resource library, and ongoing professional development.
